Valentine’s Day Isn’t Just About Romance — It’s About Filling Your Own Cup

Valentine’s Day Isn’t Just About Romance — It’s About Filling Your Own Cup

Valentine’s Day often comes wrapped in expectations — romance, gifts, grand gestures. But for many of us, it can also feel overwhelming, isolating, or simply… exhausting.

This year, I want to talk about something different: self-love as a daily practice, not a once-a-year event on Valentine´s Day.

Burnout taught me the importance of slowing down

Before starting Imogen, I spent eight years working as a consulting chemist. I loved the science, the problem-solving, the constant learning — but I ignored one crucial thing: my own wellbeing

I was working almost around the clock, often sleeping only five to six hours a night and constantly on the go. Burnout doesn’t arrive loudly — it creeps in slowly. You push through tiredness, skip rest, and tell yourself you’ll slow down “after this project,” until one day your body and mind simply won’t cooperate anymore.

Building this brand became my way of choosing a slower, more intentional life — one where care is woven into the everyday, not reserved for moments of crisis.

Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s maintenance

We often treat self-care as something indulgent or optional. In reality, it’s closer to maintenance. Just like we nourish our body, our mental health needs regular attention too.

Self-love doesn’t require dramatic changes or perfect routines. Often, it’s found in small, repeatable rituals that signal safety and care to your nervous system. Those few minutes just to breathe and unwind.

Gentle ways to fill your own cup this Valentine’s Day

If Valentine’s Day feels overwhelming this year, or you’ve been putting yourself last for far too long, here are a few simple, nourishing ways to reconnect with yourself — no pressure, no perfection required.

1. Take the evening to slow down
Apply a face mask, lie down, and give yourself permission to rest. Adding a few minutes of gentle breathwork can help calm your nervous system and bring you back into your body. Our Brightening Saffron Mask is perfect for this kind of ritual — nurturing, calming, and quietly luxurious. Follow with our Forest Blossom Moisturiser to plump and nourish the skin, leaving it silky soft.

2. Create something with your hands
Creativity doesn’t have to be productive. Bake a batch of cookies, colour in, paint, knit, or make something simply because it feels good. Creating without an outcome can be deeply grounding.

3. Practice a gua sha massage
Using a face oil, take a few slow minutes to massage your face with a gua sha tool. This can help release tension, encourage circulation, and create a moment of calm presence. A nourishing repairing face oil like our Scandi Glow Face Oil works beautifully for this kind of ritual.

4. Take a luxurious bath
Warm water, low lighting with non-toxic candles, a few drops of essential oils (my favourite are Lavender and Rose), and no rushing. Sprinkling in some Epsom salts can help soften tired muscles and encourage deeper relaxation — a perfect way to slow down and regulate your nervous system.

5. Write yourself a love letter
This might feel uncomfortable at first — i know i did. Write to yourself with the kindness you’d offer someone you love. Acknowledge how far you’ve come, what you’re holding on to, what you need right now and one nice word about yourself.

6. Spend time in nature
A walk outside, fresh air, bare feet on the ground if possible. Nature has a quiet way of slowing us down and reminding us that we don’t need to be constantly doing to be worthy.

This Valentine’s Day, whether you’re celebrating with someone else or spending time alone, I hope you find small ways to fill your own cup — and that a few of these gentle rituals find their way into your weeks beyond Valentine’s Day too. You deserve care that doesn’t ask anything from you in return.
