How to Layer Skincare Products: Face Oil, Mist, and Moisturiser β In the Right Order
You've invested in beautiful, natural skincare. But are you actually applying it in the right order?
It's one of the most common questions we get asked at Imogenβ and honestly, it makes a real difference. Layer your products correctly, your skin will drink them up and you will see results quicker. Layer them in the wrong order and you might unknowingly be blocking your skin from getting the most out of each product.
The good news: it's simpler than you think.
Why Layering Order Matters
Skin absorbs ingredients best when products are applied from thinnest to thickest consistency. Think of it like layers of clothing β a fine silk shirt goes on before a cosy wool jumper. Put them on in the wrong order and nothing sits right.
The same logic applies to skincare. Lightweight, water-based products need direct contact with the skin to penetrate properly. Richer, oil-based products seal everything in and protect the skin's moisture barrier. Apply a face oil before a mist, for example, and the oil creates a barrier the mist simply can't get through.
The Imogen Layering Order
Here's the simple ritual sequence we recommend:
Step 1: Cleanse
Always start with a clean canvas. Our Twinflower Cleansing Balm gently melts away impurities without stripping the skin's natural oils β leaving it soft and ready to absorb what comes next.
Step 2: Mist
While skin is still slightly damp (or immediately after cleansing), spritz your Triple Tree Face Mist. Applying your mist first does two important things: it floods the skin with hydration while the barrier is most receptive, and it creates a water-based layer for your subsequent products to work with, not against.
Tip: Hold the bottle 20β30cm from your face and let it settle naturally. No need to rub it in.
Step 3: Moisturiser
Next, your moisturiser. Apply Forest Blossom Moisturiser with gentle upward strokes about 60 seconds after misting β its botanicals work to lock in hydration, nourish the skin, and reinforce its natural protective barrier.Β
Step 4: Face Oil (Last)
This is where most people go wrong β applying face oil before their moisturiser. But oils should always come after.Β
Why? Because oil molecules are larger and create a semi-occlusive seal over the skin. Applied last, your Scandi Glow Face Oil locks in everything beneath it and strengthens the skin's lipid barrier. Applied too early, it blocks your lighter products from penetrating into the skin
The one exception to the oil-last rule is sunscreen. SPF doesn't need to be absorbed β it works by sitting on top of the skin and creating a physical shield between you and the sun. So in the morning, apply your face oil first, then finish with SPF over the top.
Tip: Warm 2β3 drops of face oil between your palms and press gently into the skin rather than rubbing. This delivers the oil more evenly and feels wonderfully grounding.
Morning vs Evening: Does It Change?
Slightly, yes.
In the morning, a full cleanse isn't necessary β a gentle splash of lukewarm water is enough to wake your skin up. From there: Mist β Moisturiser β Face Oil β SPF. Always finish with SPF in the daytime.
Morning ritual: A full cleanse isn't necessary β a gentle splash of lukewarm water is enough to wake your skin up. Then follow;Β
Mist β Moisturiser β Face Oil β SPF (always finish with SPF in the daytime)Β
Evening ritual: Cleanse β Mist β Moisturiser β Face Oil. At night your skin is in repair mode, so this is the ideal time to be generous with your face oil.
A Note on Face Masks
If you're using our Brightening Saffron Mask, treat it as a treatment step β use it after cleansing but before your mist and moisturiser, once or twice a week. Regular masking helps detoxify the skin and allows your active ingredients to penetrate more deeply, meaning everything you apply afterwards works harder. Leave it on for 10β20 minutes, rinse, then continue with your usual ritual. Your skin will be exceptionally receptive to everything that follows.
The Simple Summary
| Step | Product | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cleanser | Prep clean skin |
| 2 | Face Mist | Hydrates and tones while skin is receptive |
| 3 | Moisturiser | The active step β improves elasticity, firms and contours, reduces puffiness, evens skin tone, and softens fine lines |
| 4 | Face Oil | Seal, repair and protect |
